The historic Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) kicked off in Apia, Samoa—marking the first time a small-island Pacific nation has hosted this global event. Delegates gathered for an opening ceremony infused with traditional Samoan culture, symbolizing unity and resilience.
Opening Ceremony
The day began with the symbolic arrival of the Torch of Change, setting a hopeful tone for the week.
Hon. Fiamē Naomi Mataʻafa, Prime Minister of Samoa, welcomed nearly 1,000 delegates, stating:
“This gathering marks the start of a historic week for our Commonwealth Aiga. The three forums we are launching represent the critical voices of our people—our women, youth, and children.”
Commonwealth Youth Forum (CYF)
The 13th CYF celebrated the Commonwealth Year of Youth with vibrant energy. Young leaders from 56 nations reflected on achievements and pledged action on key global issues. The event highlighted youth-driven initiatives in climate resilience, social entrepreneurship, and policy advocacy.
Commonwealth Women’s Forum
Opened by Hon. Mulipola Anarosa Ale-Molio’o, Samoa’s Minister for Women, and Rt. Hon. Patricia Scotland KC, Commonwealth Secretary-General, the forum gathered hundreds of women leaders. It emphasized the urgent need for stronger commitments to gender equity and women’s empowerment across member states.
Commonwealth People’s Forum
This forum showcased the power of civil society, using poetry, music, and photography to spotlight the challenges facing small and vulnerable states. Discussions focused on climate justice, health equity, and freedom of expression.
