Samoa, a vibrant large ocean state, is in the final stages of preparation for the upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Apia. Next week, over 4,000 delegates, including leaders from 56 Commonwealth nations, will gather to shape the future of this global community. This marks Samoa’s historic debut as the first Small Island Developing State (SIDS) from the Blue Pacific to host CHOGM.
A Warm Samoan Welcome
Prime Minister Fiamē Naomi Mataʻafa expressed her anticipation:
“Consistent with the spirit of our Commonwealth aiga and guided by the fa’asamoa, my Government, the people of Samoa, and I eagerly look forward to welcoming the Commonwealth family to our island home.”
His Majesty King Charles III, attending for the first time as Head of the Commonwealth, will be a distinguished guest alongside Queen Camilla, adding significance to this landmark event.
Village Spirit and Public-Private Partnerships
The spirit of hospitality resonates throughout Apia and beyond. Villages have adopted Commonwealth nations, adorning roads with colorful stones and signs, all part of a beautification program led by the Samoa Tourism Authority. Everywhere, visitors are greeted with warm smiles, waves, and the heartfelt greeting, “Talofa!”
Local businesses, such as Sails Restaurant, have welcomed guests from as far as South Africa, Nigeria, the Caribbean, and the UK. Co-owner Lyvia Hansell-Black emphasized CHOGM’s lasting impact:
“CHOGM will foster long-term benefits, from friendships formed to future partnerships. Visitors should explore the markets and roadside stalls for hidden treasures.”
Ready for a Samoan Experience
CHOGM Samoa 2024 isn’t just about meetings—it’s a cultural showcase of the Blue Pacific’s diverse traditions, challenges, and opportunities. Coordinated by the Samoa National Task Force, chaired by the Prime Minister, preparations have included infrastructure upgrades, enhanced media facilities, and the resurfacing of roads.
These investments promise lasting benefits, ensuring Samoa’s development long after the summit concludes. As Samoa opens its arms to the Commonwealth family, CHOGM 2024 stands ready to be a transformative event, blending diplomatic dialogue with rich cultural exchange.
